Create a lead magnet! Give out a freebie! That’s the best way to grow your email list. We hear that all the time and it’s true but…. how exactly do you do that? Where do you even start? It’s easier than you think! Follow these 7 steps to create your lead magnet and you’ll be growing your email list in no time!Identify the target audience you are creating the lead magnet for.
Step One: What audience do you want to attract?
The more specific you get, the better you’ll be able to create a lead magnet that resonates and brings in the right audience. For example, creating a lead magnet for business owners is really general but creating a lead magnet for female coaches who run online courses would be much easier to target. If you need more help narrowing down your audience, check out my blog on creating your customer persona.

Step Two: What value does your lead magnet provide?
Now that you know who your lead magnet is for, it’s time to figure out what it will be about. Ask yourself these questions to get some ideas:
- How can you help your target audience?
- What are their pain points?
- What solutions do you have for them?
- What value can you give them?
It’s important to keep in mind that your lead magnet should be something that will help your target audience solve a problem. It’s not about you or your business or even selling your product/service. It’s about giving value so your audience begins to know, like, and trust you. Sales come later after you’ve established this.
Step Three: Write your lead magnet.
Typically you want to keep it under 1,000 words which can be about 1-5 pages designed. You’ll want a little info about you and or your brand. Again, not a place to sell but a place to tell your story and connect with your audience. In the middle you offer the value or solution you are providing. At the end include at least one next step. For example, now that you have their attention and you know they are interested, what do you want them to do next? This is a great place to offer more free value and connection. You can offer things about why they should follow you on social media and drop your links. Or a free call to help them discover XYZ and a button to book that call. How can you take them to the next step of the process to get to know, like, and trust you?

Step Four: Design your lead magnet.
Once all your copy is written, it’s time to think about graphics. This is my favorite part! There are a lot of ways to create your lead magnet but the most popular are InDesign and Canva. If you are new to design and looking to do it yourself, Canva is a great option. They have templates you can choose from and it’s a really user friendly experience. If design is not in your wheelhouse, you can always hire this part out too. Hint..hint..I love to do these projects so you can contact me anytime 😉
Step Five: Create a way to capture those email addresses.
Build a landing page, a pop up on your website, or drop it in your funnel. All that matters is that you have a way to collect an email address before it delivers your lead magnet. This is how you build your email list after all! Then keep that page simple. You need a juicy headline, a subheadline with a little detail, and 2-3 reasons your target audience needs this.
Step Six: Set up an email automation.
Ok, you got that email address, they loved your lead magnet, now what? Set up an email automation. This can be 3-5 email follow ups sent over 1-2 weeks. There are many resources to help you write this email sequence and many email providers have these automation templates for you. My favorite is Flodesk. You can use this link to get 50% off!

Step Seven: Promote your lead magnet.
Now it’s time to get eyeballs in front of your lead magnet! Put it everywhere! Here are some ways I promote lead magnets:
- Post about it on all your social media channels.
- Change out your FB cover banner to promote it and use your Learn More button to go to the lead magnet sign up.
- Drop it in Facebook Groups that allow you to promote.
- Share it on podcasts, events, FB or IG lives, your blog, etc.
- Collaborate with others to share it with their audience.
- Put it on your website.
- Run some social media ads to it.
